OXFORD SUMMER SCHOOLS.
Sutton Trust Summer School: 7-13 and 14-20 July 2002
Each year Year 12 students from maintained schools and colleges across the UK are invited to apply for the Sutton Trust Summer School. The students spend a week in Oxford, staying free of charge in one of the colleges. They take a course of study designed to complement their A-levels which is taught by Oxford tutors and closely resembles that of a first year undergraduate. Students attend lectures and seminars in their chosen subject and work towards a mini-tutorial at the end of the week. In addition to this, students participate in a wide-range of extra-curricular and social activities. The Summer School aims to raise the aspirations of able young people and to motivate students with the potential to obtain places at universities like Oxford.
Subjects on offer in week 1: Medicine, Chemistry, Law, Music, Modern Languages, Archaeology and Anthropology, Physics and Theology.
Subjects on offer in week 2: Classics, English, Medicine, History and Mathematics.
The Higher Education Summer School: 14-19 July 2002
Oxford will host a Higher Education Summer School in 2002. Higher Education Summer Schools are funded by the government with places organised via students' schools and LEAs. They enable Year 11 students to from state schools in Education Action Zones and Excellence in Cities areas to spend a week in a higher education institution. The week will have a busy schedule of academic taster sessions, extra-curricular activities and social events. The aim is to provide an exciting introduction to HE and to inspire the participants to apply to HE after their Post-16 studies.
THE UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING.
A visit by the school of engineering was arranged for all those students interested in the following Disciplines:
Chemical Engineering.

There were opportunities to question the visiting lecturer after the presentation.
MOCK INTERVIEWS.
For those who would like to arrange a "Mock interview" see BCL.
All Oxbridge candidates and Medics have had this opportunity and have found these interviews to be useful.
Medics have been interviewed by various Consultants who have given up their valuable time to come into school to conduct these interviews.
If you know anyone can offer mock interviews for any subject or profession please ask them to contact BCL at school.
WORK SHADOWING.
Some 6th. Form students have expressed an interest in work shadowing during their holidays.
For example if you are applying for Medicine it is a pre requisite that you have some work experience in Hospitals and with GPs etc.
Normally it is up to the student to arrange this but if you are having problems we may be able to help.
If you know of any useful contacts that Five Ways pupils could call on please see BCL.
